Graphic Design and Communication

Not many people realise that the effect of a poem can be greatly impacted by the graphic design of it. Colour, font, and imagery play a huge role in how a poem, or really any piece of literature makes one feel.

How do Colour, Font, and Imagery effect the feel of poetry?

Colour is one of the most important elements of graphic design; the right colour can add to the feel and enhance the mood of the poem whereas the wrong colour can make the poem feel out of place in it's own environment. Font is especially important when presenting a piece of writing. Some less experienced individuals might overlook it as an important characteristic when, just like colour the right font can enhance the mood of a piece and the wrong one could be a huge detriment to it. Imagery, though less important in this context than cololur or font can also dramatically change the feel of the piece.

The poem pictured above by Tyler Knott Gregson is in my opinion, an especially good example of effective graphic design as it aids the mood and theme of the poem. The colour: a light beige, is closely tied to the imagery, an old piece of paper on which the poem has been typed. The font of the poem is reflective of what it was written with, a typewriter. Due in no small part to the graphic design of it, the poem conveys old library book or lost love letter energy. Which coluld be an incredibly interesting vibe to go for especially for a piece of poetry.
