Cliques - What and Why?

Cliques; most of us have heard the word, but what does it mean? What are cliques? How do they come about? Are they important? Are they a good thing or not? Am I in a clique? If not, should I be?

What are 'Cliques' and Why are they "Oh-so Important"?

A clique is usually a small group of people with common interests, who often spend time together and rarely add new members to the group. However, they are not necessarily a group of friends. Some very stereotypical cliques that media often portrays are the nerds, jocks, and popular girls. I personally think cliques form because people feel that they must be seen with a group of "friends" all the time and if they don't they're immediatly seen as a loser. Cliques won't always lead to issues but they have a lot of potential to do so. Since cliques rarely let new members into the group they could lead to many people, especially people new to the school, feeling left out. So, in conclsion, cliques are not an inherently bad thing but they could lead to some issues. I think that true friend groups should be encouraged and cliques should not, to help avoid any problems that may arise because of them.
